Here in Manor we have always been a welcoming place, there is no place here for hatred and divison. If anyone needs support please reach out.
As Stockport Labour we represent wards across the whole borough here is our statement.
—
Stockport Labour extends the hand of friendship to those seeking asylum who are currently residing in hotels across our borough. While we will always protect people’s right to protest, we have been disappointed to see the level of hatred aimed at people who are fleeing persecution and war. Stockport Labour firmly believes that those seeking refuge and safety should always find it here in our borough.
We are also aware that many people, especially those of Black, Asian and mixed-heritage are currently feeling unsafe and we want to ensure Stockport is a safe place where everyone can thrive. As the council often states, we are One Stockport. This applies now more than ever.
As such, Stockport Labour denounces the actions of those few people who travel to our borough with the sole purpose of whipping up hate and division. We will continue to stand up for our borough’s compassionate and welcoming principles to ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome.
Furthermore, while we believe that pride in our country is vitally important, as shown during Remembrance services, sporting occasions and other significant national moments, we believe the ‘Raise Your Colours’ campaign is being used by some to cause division within our communities, and we cannot stand by and say nothing about this.
Flying flags on lamp posts to intimidate others and graffitiing public property with red paint is not, in our view, patriotic: if anything, it undermines British values and the Union and St George’s Flags.
In this year when we have commemorated VE and VJ Day, we claim our national flag as a symbol of genuine patriotism and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
As such we are calling on the council to remove all flags and graffiti from street furniture and ask that those who wish to display the flag, do so on their own property and give the flag and our national identity the respect it deserves.
