Last night Councillors Hibbert, Carrigan, Vibert and I spoke on our motion which called for continued and accelerated work to close the inequality gap in our borough.
Last year we not only had the accolade of being called the "Best place to live" we had the contrasting news that our borough is now the most polarised in the whole of England, the gap between our least and most deprived residents is bigger than anywhere else.
Deprivation is more than money in peoples pockets, it is the life chances they have, it is the choices they are able to make day to day and it is the quality of health they are able to sustain. If we want to be a borough that is proud of our success, of which there are many, we have to ensure that all of our residents are able to benefit and enjoy that success.
Last nights motion was bigger than politics despite the administration trying to turn it that way, it is an important issue and one we have both a moral and frankly financial duty to solve. We as a group accepted less than perfect amendments because we chose showing a united front to our most vulnerable residents over a political battle, because Stockport Labour Group will always make reducing inequality our defining policy.
